Salihi, Habibullah (1915-1985)

Tar instrumentalist and teacher of the radif corpus and classical Persian repertoires who studied natural sciences at the academic level. An outstanding student of the maestro tar player ‘Ali Akbar Shahnazi, he began his activities in the domain of Persian music from 1936 onwards taught classical Persian music together with Shahnazi, Muhammad Bahraynipur, and Muhammad Baharlu (violinist and composer). He performed in radio orchestras from 1953 onwards and also performed in the orchestras of Sarkhwush, Miftah, and Muhsini. His solo performances are not recorded in the Gulha programmes but some of his few compositions were used in them. Employing musical notation he recorded ‘Ali Akbar Shahnazi’s repertoire for tar which was published by Faramarz Kiyaras (Tehran 1985). No recordings of his performances have to date been released.
