Ibrahim Sahba

Sahba, Ibrahim (1911/1912-1998), son of Mahdi. A university professor, journalist, and poet with the nom de plume Sahba. He was born in the village of ‘Abdulabad, Turbat Hiydariyyih. His father was a feudal lord whom vicissitudes and many a hardship had driven from his homeland to Birjand. He received his primary and some of his secondary education at Shawkatiyya High School, Birjand, where he taught for a year as well. He departed for Tehran to further his studies at Dar al-Funun. Then he furthered his studies at the Officers’ Training College and while studying military disciplines, he composed military anthems and satirical poems. Having completed his studies, he was transferred to Tabriz and then to Shiraz. He stayed in Shiraz for three years and later moved to Tehran and taught at the Officers’ Training College. He found an employment at the Ministry of Finance in 1945. He embarked upon his poetical career in 1926 as a student at Shakatiyya School in Birjand, and published his poetry in the Azadi, the Aftab-i Sharq, the Khurasan, and the Sharzih and contributed poetry in Tehran to the Tihran Musavvar, the Ittila’at weekly, the Rawshanfikr, the Khandaniha, the Umid-i Iran, and the Baba Shamal. He made his first contribution to the satirical newspaper Baba Shamal with nom de plume Shaykh Surna and Ibram Sarpa. He made the acquaintance of Rahi Mu’ayyiri and Gulchin Ma’ani there and they exchanged discussions. He was also a musician and played the tar. His works include Daftar-i Sahba; Saghar-i Sahba; Insan u Shi’r u Mah.
