Kurus Sarhang-zada

Kurus Sarhangzada (1936-)

Vocalist performing classical and lyrical songs. He was born in Kerman into a family of literature lovers and musicians. Upon his emigration to Tehran in 1954, he was impressed by the vocal style of Daryush Rafi‘i (1925-1959), the prominent vocalist of Kermani descent who was at the zenith of his fame at that time. Sarhangzada’s warm and pleasant voice and the deep sorrowful tone of his vocal delivery soon won him many fans. Before long he and the violinist Habibu’llah Badi‘i, and the great song-writer and poet Rahim Mu‘ini Kirmanshahi, had formed an artistic triangle of repute. Twenty-five performances of his singing are available in the Gulha-yi sahra’i and Yik shakh-i gul programmes with the lyrics of Mu‘ini Kirmanshahi (1921-) and the poetess Simin Bihbahani (1926-), along with others. Since his sensitive creative spirit couldn’t adapt to the new ‘revolutionary’ environment that suddenly overshadowed the radio and television in Tehran in 1979, since that date he has lived  the life of a recluse. The disastrous earthquake in Bam near Kerman that occurred in 1383, to which he lost nearly two hundred family members and friends, then made him retire for good from all musical and convivial activities. Gramophone records containing his songs recorded in the years 1967-69 are still available.
