Kukab Khurasani

Kukab Khurasani, a poetess whose biographical account in the book entitled Zanan-i Sukhanwar, reads, ‘This talented poet of vigor is widely known for her erudition and mastery of poetry, as reflected in the specimens of her poetry. She was from Khurasan, though her biographical account is not attested in biographical sources. The following lines are by her:

The flower, perturbed in the morn, shed its petals,

Telling the eastern wind some accounts and withered away.

Behold the upsets of time that in a week,

The flower blossomed, bloomed, and withered.

Did you see what the evil eye of the time did?

Did you see what were the consequences of the beloved’s breaking the promise?

If the beloved did not support out being slain,

It was our hopes set on our deadly wounds.
